1st Annual Vashon Island

Amateur Cider Cup

In 2023 the VIFC Cider Guild partnered with the Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce to host its 1st Annual Vashon Island Amateur Cider Cup. The competition was an official part of CiderFest that took place October 7th, 2023 at Vashon Village.

Rules

The competition is open to amateur cider and perry makers who either reside on Vashon-Maury Island or are dues paying members of the Vashon Island Fruit Club.

At least 51% of the apples or pears in your cider or perry must be sourced from Vashon-Maury Island grown fruit. This does not apply to other ingredients.

2024 CiderFest: Submission deadline will be shared later this year.

Categories

1) Cider / Perry - Ciders or perries that are made using only apples OR pears. Beverages that blend the two should be submitted in the Specialty category.

2) Specialty - This is a catch-all category for ciders and perries that contain ingredients other than apples or pears or combine the two. This includes fruit cider and perry, hopped cider and perry, co-fermentations, botanical infusions, cysers, etc.

Judging

The competition will be judged by a consortium of professional cider makers present for CiderFest. The judging will be done blind using a modified BJCP Cider Scoresheet. Each bottle will be wrapped in paper and labeled with an assigned number.

Awards

Recognition will be given to the top three ciders or perries in each category.

Prizes will be announced at the event. You might get bragging rights, you might get something more. But no, we won’t be handing out lame trophies like this one.

  • You may submit one cider or perry in each category.

  • The minimum amount for each entry is 2 x 12 oz (355mL) bottles. You are welcome to exceed this amount but you must meet the minimum in order to be judged.
